Course Summary:
The SQL Introduction course covers the basics of the SQL language as used in relational database management systems. This is a generic course with the objective to provide students with the base skills needed to use the SQL language.

Target Audience:
Anyone who will be using SQL to extract data from relational database management system.

Recommended Prerequisites:
An understanding of computer system fundamentals. No prior exposure to SQL is necessary.

Course Objectives:
After completing this course, the student should be able to:

Understand the basic structure of a Relational Database

Create simple tables using SQL

Insert, update and delete data from a database using SQL

Selectively extract and sort data from a database

Use aggregate functions to summarise data

Create SQL queries across multiple tables

Assessments are done throughout the course in the form of practical assignments that the delegates are required to complete as part of the course content.

Relational Database basics
  - Tables, records and field
  - Primary and foreign keys

Using the SQL language:
  - Creating database and table structures
  - Inserting data into tables
  - Modifying table data
  - The basic SELECT statement
  - Data filtering with the WHERE clause
  - Sorting selected data with the ORDER BY clause
  - Arithmetic, comparison and logical operators
  - Aggregate functions: SUM, AVERAGE, MAX, MIN and COUNT
