Course Summary:
This course is a basic introduction to the TCP/IP protocol suite and related services. Gain the prerequisite knowledge for follow-on Networking, Operations or Web Technology courses.

Target Audience:
Everyone needing an introduction to the TCP/IP protocol suite and related services namely Web developers, network technicians, system architects, operations staff and Internet solution providers.

Recommended Prerequisites:
No prerequisites exist for this course, but a fundamental understanding of IT is highly advised.

Course Objectives:
After completing this course, the student should be able to:

  • describe the roles of a network and a protocol
  • describe the Internet and internetworking development
  • differentiate between TCP/IP and Open System Interconnect (OSI) models
  • explain the organization and control of TCP/IP standards
  • describe the TCP/IP architectural model
  • describe the IP datagram and TCP segment formats
  • describe the client/server model for distributed computing
  • describe the fundamentals of a TCP/IP application
  • understand the major TCP/IP applications
  • discuss basic Internet security issues
