Course Summary:
XML by itself is all about data with a described flexibility. To use XML on the Web and/or in traditional applications, the structure of XML needs to be understood, plus the supporting standards that allow transformations and usage of the described data. This course focuses on the XML syntax and rules, using DTDs, Namespaces, CSS for display, XPath and Transformations with XSL, XSLT and the DOM.

Target Audience:
Anyone needing an introduction to XML: Application developers, Web developers, XML document authors and Webmasters.

Recommended Prerequisites:

  • Familiarity with the Web and IT concepts
  • HTML and programming experience would be beneficial

    Course Objectives:
    After completing this course, the student should be able to:

  • Describe the concepts of XML documents
  • Understand and use the coding rules for elements and attributes of valid documents
  • Create a DTD to validate a XML document
  • Understand and use Namespaces and Schemas in validation
  • Use XSL and XSLT to transform XML documents to different types of output
  • Access XML documents through the DOM
  • Find XML tools, resources and examples on the Web
  • Provide examples of XML usage
